WHO WE ARE
The Society of Wiltshire Archers
As its name suggests, the Society was established as an archery club, reflecting the popularity of the sport in mid-19th century society. The first meeting was held at Potterne Manor in 1852 and regular archery tournaments continued to be held, for ladies and gentlemen, for the next 60 years. The first tennis tournament was held at Neston Park in 1878 and tennis grew in popularity, as interest in archery waned. All activities of the Society were closed down during both World Wars and for one year during the Boer War. Archery never restarted after the First World War; tennis continues to this day. The Society now seeks to provide social opportunities for tennis and other events for members and their families.

Tournaments
The Society does not have its own courts. Instead it organizes up to six tournaments each summer, on private courts and using the wonderful facilities at St Mary's Calne and Marlborough College. Mixed doubles round robins are played, catering for players of all abilities, but the emphasis is firmly on enjoying the game. Guests are welcome, but must be introduced by a member. For full details of this year's tournaments follow the 'Tournaments' link, above.
Membership
Membership of the Society is open to those resident in, or connected with, the county of Wiltshire. Members may bring guests, both senior and junior, to tournaments - and are encouraged to do so. If you are interested in playing sociable tennis in good company then please contact the Secretary who will arrange for you to attend a tournament as a guest, before deciding whether you'd like to join. New members must be proposed by an existing member, but the Secretary can also help arrange this. Email the Secretary
